I like to say I succeeded when attempting to balance a full-time triathlon training schedule and full-time job. But in that time, life presents many uncontrollable variables in, which add a substantial amount of stress that does not contribute to positive training adaptations. Dr. Zuleger helped put into perspective the variables that I can control in the moment, to focus on those variables and dedicate the time and energy I have on those. In a just a short time I noticed significant changes in performance and attitude towards training. So much energy is lost stressing about the uncontrollable things that happen in life that only takes away from the important things, like training adaptations! Dr. Zuleger helped me “build” the situation just like how we “build” training schedules and the results showed.

Dr Zuleger’s Mental Strength Model, as well as his teachings, have been beneficial throughout my entire undergraduate program, as an athlete, as a graduate student, and currently as an assistant coach for the University. His dynamic has been a strong “eye opener” in how I view my thoughts and how I am more in control of myself than what I perceive it to be. I have learned many things! I have applied his teaching to my student athletes! It has been a great tool for me battling through constant adversity. I am very thankful for having him as a professor.

After competing in track and field in college, I competed on Team USA as a bobsledder, Age Group Team USA as a triathlete, and I currently compete as a Category 1 road cyclist. Brian taught me mental strategies that helped me break workouts down into manageable pieces in order to help me not only get through but excel in hard solo training sessions. He worked with me and guided me through my natural tendency towards perfectionism and fear of failure and aided me in enjoying and becoming excited about the process of training and competing! He also gave me the skills to enter new competitions where I was lacking confidence to prepare and execute as if I were the best competitor in the race. Brian is expert at identifying and working with you in your “areas needing improvement” in sport psychology and fortifying your overall “mental strength” as an athlete and person. If you want to reach the heights of your athletic potential, I would highly recommend working with Brian!

Making the transition from college athlete to professional athlete has been smoother than expected thanks to Brian. Over the years I have learned more and more about what is important to think about leading into a significant race and even regular training. I have had consistency in great performances as a professional that is a complete turnaround since college. It is a great feeling to not be nervous leading up to any races as a professional compared to my collegiate career. The confidence that Brian not only instilled in myself but helped me find within myself was the biggest change. Not focusing on the competition or the race, all of that will take care of itself, but learning to focus on the work I have put in. Learning to lean into and rediscover myself as an athlete has been extremely rewarding with Dr. Zuleger. I highly recommend Brian if you are looking to take the next step, no matter where you are in your athletic endeavors. He is a great coach and even better mentor.
